## Every SoundFont file and what it adds

Chordzy uses many SoundFont files as synthesizers, and the licensing for each comes from a project that shares its sounds on the internet. A SoundFont is an `.sf2` file: recorded samples plus the rules for turning a key press into a sound. One file can hold a whole orchestra.

The app carries 13 of them, with 1,021 instrument presets between them. GeneralUser GS is the default. Its Stereo Grand is the piano you hear first, and its Wood Block is the default percussion sound.

| SoundFont file | Presets |
|---|---|
| GeneralUser GS | 275 |
| FluidR3 GM | 189 |
| Chaos | 140 |
| SBLive | 137 |
| SoundBlaster Old | 129 |
| JCLive | 123 |
| Soul Ahhs | 13 |
| SBAWE32 | 6 |
| Les Paul | 4 |
| Stratocaster | 2 |
| Gibson Les Paul | 1 |
| LK Godin Nylon | 1 |
| LK Acoustic Steel | 1 |

GeneralUser GS was made by S. Christian Collins, and FluidR3 GM by Frank Wen. The six big files follow General MIDI, a standard list of 128 instruments, so the first preset in every one of them is a grand piano. The seven small files add what General MIDI does not: 13 sung "ahh" pads in Soul Ahhs, and 15 extra guitar sounds across the other six.

| Category | Presets |
|---|---|
| Synth | 150 |
| Effects | 149 |
| Percussion | 130 |
| Woodwind | 109 |
| Guitar | 92 |
| Piano | 84 |
| Strings | 82 |
| Bass | 65 |
| Brass | 45 |
| Organ | 44 |
| Plucked strings | 26 |
| Vocal | 25 |
| Reed | 20 |

Effects outnumber pianos almost two to one. They are General MIDI's effects, Seashore and Applause among them, and five of the files have a Helicopter.

On the website, the sounds come as WebAudioFont files, one small file per preset rather than one big file per SoundFont. The [SoundFonts help page](/help/synthesizers/sound-fonts.md) shows where to pick a different sound for your keyboard. With a free account, that pick follows you to the app and your other devices.

Some keyboards have good speakers built in. If you prefer yours, set the Chordzy synthesizer volume to zero. Sheet music is licensed separately, on the [licensing page](/about/licensing.md).
