## Is Chordzy free?

Many features in Chordzy are free, and a subscription pays for the few that are not. The web version needs no download. You can start playing without an account, and making one costs nothing.

Our subscription model is built on transparent, fair pricing. We charge for a feature only when running it costs us money, and the list below names every one. The aim is to be the most affordable music learning app out there.

The browser tools are free as well: the [virtual piano](/tools/virtual-piano.md), the [metronome](/tools/metronome.md), the [chord finder](/tools/chord-finder.md) and the [circle of fifths](/tools/circle-of-fifths.md).

## What needs a paid subscription

The following features require a paid subscription:

- Uploading & creating your own sheet music
- Playing more than 30 min / week
- Full offline mode
- Access to pop / modern songs (not yet available; see the [roadmap](/about/roadmap.md))

Thirty minutes a week works out to a little over four minutes a day.

Each of these paid features creates costs for Chordzy, for servers and for licensing. A pop or modern song almost always needs a license from a big publisher, and subscription revenue goes straight toward those deals. The [licensing](/about/licensing.md) page explains why. With uploads, the system breaks your sheet music down into lessons before you can learn it.

You see the renewal and cancellation terms when you sign up. A third-party payment processor handles the charge itself.

## A student discount on the first year

If you're a committed student and need the help, you can get your first year at a 75% discount. [Contact us](/contact) to learn more.

Teachers get something free without asking. You can use the embeddable keyboards and the scale sheet music in lessons, even on a website you charge for. The [page for piano teachers](/about/for-piano-teachers.md) has the details.
