## The Major Scale

Every major scale is made from the same pattern of steps:

> whole-whole-half-whole-whole-whole-half

In half steps, the same pattern reads:

> 2-2-1-2-2-2-1

Either spelling counts upward from a starting note to the same note an octave higher. The [C major scale](/sheet-music/music-theory/c-major-scale/piano.md) shows it best, because every note in it is white. Start from another note and use the same pattern again.
