Chordzy for Piano Teachers

Chordzy is a piano-teaching game that listens to what a student plays and grades it note by note. Everything on this page is free to use in your teaching, whether or not your students ever open the app: playable keyboards you can put on your own website, printable sheet music for every scale, and browser tools that work on the classroom computer. If you do assign the app, students practise between lessons with feedback, and you see what they did.

Every scale and chord page on Chordzy has an Embed this keyboard link under its keyboard. It gives you two lines of HTML to paste into your studio website, a lesson page or a school blog. The keyboard appears there, sounds a real piano, and grades the student who plays it: the notes of the scale light up in order, or the notes of the chord in any order, and a wrong key flashes red. No account is needed to play it, and it works with a MIDI keyboard or a mouse.

Swap d-major for any key (a-minor, e-flat-major) or use embed/chord/ with a chord page's name (c-major-7th, f-sharp-minor). The second line is a plain link to the page the keyboard came from; keep it, so your visitors can find the fingering, the theory and the printable version.

Each scale page offers its sheet music as a PDF, engraved from the same score the game plays, with fingering for both hands, and a MIDI file for anyone who wants to hear it. The scale chart lists every major and minor scale with its notes and fingering in one table, and the chord dictionary does the same for 120 chords across ten qualities, each with a keyboard diagram of the root position and both inversions.

For theory homework, the circle of fifths shows every key signature with its scale, relative and parallel keys and diatonic chords, and the music notation glossary explains every symbol a student will meet in the first two years, one page per symbol, each with an example and a short exercise.

The tools run in any browser with nothing installed, which makes them useful on a classroom computer or a tablet on the piano:

• The metronome has tap tempo, accented downbeats and the common time signatures.
• The virtual piano is a labelled keyboard with sound, for demonstrating a shape on a screen the whole room can see.
• The chord finder names whatever a student plays, which settles "what chord is this?" in a second.
• The sight-reading drill puts one note on the staff at a time and scores the student's speed and accuracy, treble or bass clef.

All of them work with a MIDI keyboard plugged into the computer, so a student can answer on the real instrument.

The app itself is where practice between lessons happens. A student opens a piece from the sheet music library or a step of the adult beginner course, plays it on a MIDI keyboard, and sees every note marked right, wrong, early or late. Pieces are broken into chunks, each hand can be practised alone, and the tempo starts slow and rises as the student earns it. Every attempt is graded note by note, and each piece and lesson step carries a difficulty rating.

The web version is free and needs no download; the desktop app adds lower-latency audio for serious practice. Students can play together in real time in a jam, which works for duets across two homes. If you would like to talk about using Chordzy in a studio or a school, get in touch.

Do my students need an account?

No. Every page, tool and embedded keyboard works without one. An account keeps a student's progress and unlocks unlimited practice time.

Can I use the keyboards and sheet music in paid lessons or on a paid course?

Yes. The embeddable keyboards and the scale sheet music are free to use in your teaching, including on a site you charge for. Keep the link back to the page the keyboard came from.

Does the app work on an iPad?

The web version works in a browser on a tablet, with the on-screen keyboard or a MIDI keyboard connected by USB or Bluetooth. See MIDI keyboards for what is supported.

Chordzy engraves its own scores from public-domain sources; the licensing pages explain what is included and why.
